Celebrating Memorial Day

Happy memorial day everyone!

Memorial weekend is normally one of those fun weekends for folks from the United States to be able to spend time with their family and loved ones. Although, do a lot of us know the true meaning? For those of you out of the country and for me being the history guru that I like to be. I think it is time to bring a little remembrance to all those brave veterans and soldiers that fight for our freedom every day. Freedom just is not free, and I know for myself I can take that for granted sometimes. There are so many incredible men and women who sacrifice their lives so that we can live in this incredible country that we do!

BACKGROUND

Memorial Day is a federal holiday here in the United States that is used in remembrance of all the soldiers that died while serving our country. Those families that have to remember that loved one that passed and go on living another year without them.  Here in America, there is always someone who had a family member who was in the war or knows someone that fought in the war. Memorial day was first known as decoration day, and while you’re in school you learn all about this in your history class.  According to the history channel “Decoration day originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in the U.S in 1971.”  The biggest war and one of the wars that I really remember learning about in school were the Civil War. This war took so many lives, it started in 1861 and ended in 1865, there were about 620,000 soldiers who lost their lives in that war.  Decoration day was named and called what it was because they did not want to relate it to any particular kind of battle.  So, the big question here is why did memorial day get its name and why is it on  or around May 30th?? Decoration day was renamed to memorial day after World War 1, also it is on May 30th because one of the generals back on the very first celebration of decoration day made a speech. This speech was made at the Arlington National Cemetery and again the History Channel spoke about it being made by General James Garfield. There were 5,000 participants who decorated the 20,000 graves of the Union and Confederate soldiers who were buried in the Arlington National Cemetary in Washington D.C.

AMERICAN TRADITIONS

In my hometown where I am from, there is a parade the morning of Memorial day that goes around the town and honors all of the fallen.  Here in Michigan, we try to honor the fallen by doing parades like I said above, re-enactments, festivals, carnivals, and flea markets. We raise our hands to our heart and the National Anthem is sang and heard on the radio stations all across our Country.   This is our American tradition, we also fly our flags at half-staff. There are volunteers that will also go around to every cemetery and place a flag by our veterans gravesite. There are also cities and towns that will commemorate and honor the veterans and their families. Additionally, there are restaurants who will honor those veterans and soldiers and offer free or discounted meals. Some of these restaurants include, but not limited too;  Hooters, Applebees, Outback Steakhouse, Boston Market, several pizza places, Logans Roadhouse, Twin Peaks and O’ Charley’s.  There are also several stores that have discounted prices that will go on for  memorial day or the whole holiday weekend.

I never knew when I was younger that this is where I would be in life at this very moment.  When I found out I was sick, my life took a turn for the worse for quite a while. It always felt if it wasn't one thing it was another, first, it was head injuries (about 12 concussions or more to be exact), then there were heart problems. I never thought in a million years it would have got as bad as it did, but through it all, I knew that God had it. Did I have my doubts? Of course, I did! Who in their right mind wouldn't? I just knew in my heart and still to this day know, this is exactly where the Lord wants me. With him all things are possible, and I know without him I would not be who I am today. Living the life of these illnesses has not kept me from pursuing and reaching my full potential. I was able to graduate with my Bachelors Degree in Human Resource Management, and health services administration. I worked incredibly hard at school, my strength and endurance pushed me to be the best I could be.
